Two seemingly unrelated homicides have a lot more in common than simply being investigated by Detective Boston Jane Rizzoli and coroner Maura Isles. In both cases, the cadavers have horrible wounds, but the real cause of death cannot be determined. While Jane tries to save her mother from a bad marriage, Maura must deal with the imminent death of her mother, serial killer Amalthea Lank. Although Maura's mother is dying from cancer, she still enjoys manipulating her daughter and offering cryptic clues about the two murders. Her information is just a piece of the puzzle. Their investigation takes them in unexpected directions and, once they believe they have found the killer, danger from the past threatens to devour more victims, including them.
